Totally immersive, the movie The Last Duel takes you into 14th century France where it deals with wars, the plague and an economical decline for the Kingdom. Entwined, during that period, is a true story of misogyny, a power struggle and a rivalry between Squires. Powerful acting, direction and cinematography delivers a compelling story that makes the 2 and a half hours fly by. Read more…

Inspired by actual events, the movie The Reckoning takes you to the past where we find a township in the throes of the Black Plague. Most interesting is the panic that revolved around the very devastating virus that spread like wildfire through blood from an infected person. In this film we find a diabolical government telling the people that the plague is caused by the Devil and spread through Witchcraft. In modern day we are experiencing a similar attack by the COVID-19 virus that attacks the body through droplets from an infected victim, however due to modern medicines we are able to protect the populace and even cure victims from this outbreak. Frightening, heart-rending and revealing Cursed Films becomes very compelling as it entertains in a morbid kind of way. Decades ago several films were labeled as being hexed due to mysterious deaths and accidents surrounding their release or within months of it. The tragedies had many affects and some of the films actually became iconic attracting others beyond the horror fan audience to see the films. Watching it brought back many memories of the now classic films, many of which are in my library. Read more…

“In 2006, the US Army established a series of outposts in Northern Afghanistan to promote counterinsurgency. The intent was to connect with the locals and to stop the flow of weapons and Taliban fighters from Pakistan. One of these was PRT Kamdesh. It was built in a remote valley completely surrounded by The Hindu Kush Mountains. One analyst said it may as well be called “Camp Custerâ€. His reasoning was simple and official.†– Filmmaker
Just making a statement that a film is based on a true story is one thing, but when it’s verified, you see a movie a bit differently. The screenplay’s shocking battle and the helplessness of the US Army fighters depicted in the movie The Outpost, is absolutely cringing. But, that word isn’t even a strong enough word for it. This film shows the ability and tactfulness of our military under fire, but more so, the heroism. Read more…

The map of Great Britain can be a bit confusing as it has minor separations between countries much like Europe. To the north of England is the land mass of Scotland that attaches with a regular border and is easily accessible by roadways. The country of Scotland, much like Ireland is currently under the rule the Queen of the United Kingdom. Scotland became independent from the United Kingdom for a time following civil war with Robert the Bruce who declared Scotland’s sovereignty. Nearly 200 years ago, at that point in history, this historic change of power took place with the rise of Robert the Bruce. This is the story of how the only separation of powers between nations in the kingdom actually happened. Read more…

There have been many historical stories on how the Jews in the WWII era had avoided death and incarceration by the Nazis. But, it’s never enough as the movie Resistance reminds audiences that the atrocities that befell the Jews can be brought to bear again and again with other ethnic groups. In the film we see the plight of Jewish children as they escape from France to Switzerland with the help of the famous mime Marcel Marceau. It’s a heartfelt true story that shows the determination of a few who saved many. Read more…

Actually a lot better than Pearl Harbor and the first time the movie Midway was produced, this version by Roland Emmerich is sharp, compelling and an edge of your seat thriller. Even if you are not a fan of war movies, the film does have a lot of patriotic courage, determination and historical significance that honor’s our fallen heroes. The film pulls no punches as it plays out showing the choices that were made both good and bad, both in the heat of battle on the ships at sea and by aircraft pilots. Read more…

There have been several films and TV movies about Judy Garland and her sometimes troubled life, but in Judy a snippet of the final months of her life gives one last look at the “Over the Rainbow†wonder. Nicely directed and starring Renee Zellweger as the singer and actor, the movie Judy adds a nice farewell. I hear Oscar in the wind. Read more…
