“Escape From Kabul” a HBO Documentary

Review by John Delia

Just released, the documentary Escape from Kabul tells the story of the withdrawal from Afghanistan pinpointing the extracting of both USA Citizens and those oppressed and targeted by the waring opposition. Using actual film and video, the movie puts the viewer up close to the horrific challenges of the American Soldiers and failures of the operation that left an immeasurable number of sufferers.

“Escape from Kabul unfolds over 18 monumental days in August 2021, from the U.S. withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan through the subsequent evacuation of tens of thousands of Afghan citizens for Kabul airport after the Taliban seized the city. The deeply immersive and emotional documentary combines never-before-seen archival footage from those on the ground at the airport, with exclusive interviews with people who were there throughout the period, including Afghan citizens attempting to flee, U.S. Marines tasked with managing the evacuation, and Taliban commanders and fighters who had recently taken the city”. Producer Jamie Roberts

Escape from Kabul has not been rated by the MPAA but contains strong expressive visuals that are immersive and disheartening. Some scenes may be disturbing to viewers that show the aftermath of an explosion and young children in peril.
