Miami, FL – March 24, 2022 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) is proud to present Grammy Award-winning vocalist LUCIANA SOUZA (@lucianasouzamusic) and Grammy Award-winning arranger and composer VINCE MENDOZA (@vincemedozacomposer) as the exciting culmination of the Center’s 2021-2022 JAZZ ROOTS series presented by EFG. Melding the worlds of Brazilian pop and American jazz, Souza brings her deeply personal, colorful and illuminated musicality to Mendoza’s big-band arrangements of songs by her fellow Brazilians Antonio Carlos Jobim, Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque, Guinga, Djavan, Ivan Lins and Gilberto Gil. Souza and Mendoza will be joined onstage by the University of Miami’s Frost Concert Jazz Band conducted by John Daversa.

LUCIANA SOUZA is one of jazz’s leading singers and interpreters. Her work transcends traditional musical boundaries, offering solid roots in jazz, a sophisticated lineage in world music and an enlightened approach to the latest sounds. She has performed and recorded with Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Bobby McFerrin, Maria Schneider, Danilo Perez, Guillermo Klein, and John Patitucci, among others. Souza has been releasing celebrated recordings since 2002, including her six Grammy-nominated records Brazilian Duos, North and South, Duos II, Tide, Duos III, and The Book of Chet.
VINCE MENDOZA has been at the forefront of the jazz and contemporary-music scenes as a composer, arranger, conductor and recording artist for the past 20 years. Mendoza’s arranging has appeared on many critically acclaimed projects, including albums by Björk, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Bobby McFerrin, Melody Gardot, Sting and Joni Mitchell. He has six Grammy Awards and 25 nominations. Mendoza is the music director and chief conductor of Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands. He appears frequently as a guest conductor with orchestras throughout the United States, Japan, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.
The award-winning FROST CONCERT JAZZ BAND is renowned for its outstanding musicianship, inspired performances, soloists, and well-crafted original arrangements. Under the direction of Dr. John Daversa, the large jazz ensemble continues its storied history into a new era. The ensemble has won countless Downbeat Student Music Awards throughout its history, including Outstanding Performance and Best Graduate Large Ensemble.
Opening for Souza and Mendoza is the JOHN DAVERSA QUINTET. Daversa is a distinguished trumpet-player, composer, arranger, producer, bandleader and educator. He is world-renowned for his virtuosic, dynamic and emotive style of trumpet and electronic valve instrument (EVI) playing, along with imaginative, genre-bending compositions and arrangements. Originally from Los Angeles, CA, he is currently Chair of Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. In addition to multiple awards as a bandleader and educator, his large jazz ensemble album, American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom received three Grammy Awards and his big band album Kaleidoscope Eyes: Music of the Beatles received three Grammy nominations.
Arts Education Program
Jazz Roots: Sound Check, a part of the Jazz Roots series from its inception in 2008, welcomes high school students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools to the Knight Concert Hall for free sound checks, lectures and, on occasion, opportunities to perform with headline artists from the Center’s Jazz Roots concert series. Participants also receive free admission to that evening’s Jazz Roots concert, provided free of charge by the Arsht Center. Throughout the program’s history, students have participated with jazz legends such as Chris Botti, Chucho Valdés, Candy Dulfer, Aaron Neville and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band to name a few.
