Miami, FL – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) is proud to present 20-time Grammy Award-winning guitarist and composer PAT METHENY (@patmetheny) as part of the Center’s JAZZ ROOTS series presented by EFG. Metheny will feature his new project Side-Eye, a touring collaboration with a rotating lineup of new and emerging musicians who have impressed and inspired Metheny throughout the world. Performing with Metheny for this edition of Side-Eye are keyboardist James Francies and drummer Joe Dyson.

Tickets to JAZZ ROOTS: Pat Metheny Side-Eye are $45, $55, $75 and $125* and may be purchased now at the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at arshtcenter.org.

“While touring, I regularly listen to new musicians who claim to be influenced by my records,” Metheny says, “and I often invite them to play with me. This inspires me to see the way they challenge music represented by the old melodies, and I’m curious what could happen if I write new music just for them.”

Pat Metheny has established himself as one of the most original jazz musicians in the world. He has won 20 Grammy Awards and is the only artist to do so in 12 categories, including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo and Best Instrumental Composition. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock and David Bowie.  Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces, with settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical.

Plenty of young musicians show promise, but very few enjoy the sort of meteoric rise that pianist, keyboardist and composer James Francies is currently experiencing. At only 24, he’s played with jazz headliners like Chris Potter, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Stefon Harris, Eric Harland, and Terrace Martin, and racked up equally impressive credits in hip-hop and R&B, working with Ms. Lauryn Hill, José James, Common, and NAS, among others. Francies’ own group, Kinetic, has garnered buzz at events like Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, NYC Winterfest, and BRIC JazzFest.

New Orleans native Joe Dyson started playing music in his family’s church at just two years old. Dyson has shared the stage with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ellis Marsalis, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Jon Batiste, Leo Nocentelli, Sullivan Fortner, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Paquito D’Rivera, Grammy Award winners Nicholas Payton and Esperanza Spalding, among others.

Arts Education Program

Jazz Roots: Sound Check, a part of the Jazz Roots series from its inception in 2008, welcomes high school students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools to the Knight Concert Hall for free sound checks, lectures and, on occasion, opportunities to perform with headline artists from the Center’s Jazz Roots concert series. Participants also receive free admission to that evening’s Jazz Roots concert, provided free of charge by the Arsht Center. Throughout the program’s history, students have participated with jazz legends such as Chris Botti, Chucho Valdés, Candy Dulfer, Aaron Neville and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band to name a few. Click here to watch a behind the scenes video of students experiencing a sound check with the Pete Escovedo Orchestra.

Jazz Roots: Sound Check is made possible in part by EFG; Baldwin Richardson Foods; Alan and Diane Lieberman; Green Family Foundation Trust; Quint Family Foundation; and Hazel Rosen.

JAZZ ROOTS is presented by the Arsht Center with generous support from presenting sponsor EFG. JAZZ ROOTS also receives generous support from Baldwin Richardson Foods, Quint Family Foundation, Alan and Diane Lieberman and Steinway & Sons, the official piano of the Adrienne Arsht Center. Our stages are alive year-round with artists from around the world, innovative programming from our resident companies and local arts partners, free community events that reflect Miami’s unique identity and arts education experiences for thousands of Miami children each year.

Since opening in 2006, the Arsht Center, a 501C3 non-profit organization, has been recognized as a catalyst for billions of dollars in new development in the downtown area, a leader in programming that mirrors South Florida’s diversity, a host venue for historic events and Miami’s hub for arts education.

Each year, we serve more than 60,000 young learners and offer more than 100 culturally diverse and inclusive education programs — many enhanced by the Arsht Center’s relationship with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, local teaching artists and Miami-based arts organizations.

The Arsht Center is also a home stage for three resident companies — Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet and New World Symphony — and a launch pad for local artists to make their mark on the international stage.
