TWO ADVENTURE SEQUELS OF THE LION KING Now on Blu-ray

March 5th, 2012 No comments

TWO

ADVENTURES

TWO

BLU-RAYS

THE LION KING 1 1/2 AND THE LION KING 2: SIMBA’S PRIDE

Two of The Lion King trilogy, The Lion King 1 ½ and The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride now on Blu-ray. The two animated films include some good special bonus features and with the Blu-ray format the picture on my home entertainment center screen is sharper and the colors more vibrant.

The story of The Lion King 1 ½ mainly involves Pumbaa and Timon, the wild and crazy warthog and Meercat that were the first to come upon Simba when he got lost in The Lion King.  In this animated motion picture we find the two fun loving characters romping through the jungle way before The Lion King starts.  We find out where the two came from, how they met and how they helped save the savanna on the Serengeti.  It’s a hilarious tale and one the kids will easly understand.

In The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride we find Simba’s first child being born and introduced to the animals much like in The Lion King.  But, finding out Simba and Nala had a girl and named her Kiara, well that’s a new story to tell. In her first outing as a cub she wanders off and enters a forbidden area of Scar’s daughter where she meets Kova a male cub her age that’s destined to become king of his pride.  Being that Kova is an outcast from Simba’s pride, his clan quickly shuns Kiara and she has to be saved by her father.  The film shifts to grown up Kiara who wants to hunt on her own. After much trepidation, Simba allows her to run into the Serengeti where a new story begins about revenge, rivalry and retribution.

The two stories are great companion pieces to the original and my all time favorite The Lion King.  Hand drawn and completely upgraded to the HD format, the two Blu-rays are very vibrant, clear and show strikingly on digital television screens.

The Lion King 1 ½ has upgrades of some familiar bonus features that were originally on the DVD that was released in 2004 plus an additional extra:

  • Timon & Pumbaa’s Vacation Safari
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Timon: Behind The Legend
  • Grazing in the Grass music video starring Raven
  • “Before the Beginning: The Making of Lion King 1 ½”.

The cast of The Lion King 1 ½ includes Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Ernie Sabella plus Julie Kavner and Jerry Stiller.

The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride’s bonus features include:

  • Timon & Pumbaa’s Insectapedia
  • One By One – an original animated short
  • Timon & Pumbaa’s: Find Out Why
  • Proud of Simba’s Pride
  • “Love Will Find a Way” Music Video.

The cast of The Lion King 2 includes: Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Ernie Sabella, Neve Campbell, Jason Marsden, Andy Dick, Robert Guillaume, James Earl Jones and Moira Kelly.

The technical aspects and additional information include:

  • RATING: Both films are rated G
  • ASPECT RATIO: The Lion King 1 ½ – Blu-ray: 1.66: 1/1080p High Definition, DVD: 1.66:1/Widescreen. The Lion King 2 – Blu-ray: 1.78: 1/1080p High Definition, DVD: 1.78:1/Widescreen
  • SOUND: Both films – Blu-ray: English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, French and Spanish, 5.1 Dolby Digital, DVD: 5.1 Dolby Digital English, French and Spanish.
  • LANGUAGES: Both films – English
  • SUBTITLES: Both films – English SDH, French and Spanish
  • Genres: Kids, Family, and Animated

  • Both are available in Blu-ray Combo Packs – sold separately and come with a Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download
  • Street Date: March 6, 2012
  • Distributed by: Walt Disney Home Entertainment

FINAL ANALYSIS: Great companion pieces to The Lion King. Feature: The Lion King 1 ½ Feature (B) Bonus Extras (B), The Lion King 2 feature (A) Bonus Extra’s (B).

LADY AND THE TRAMP, blu-ray review by John Delia

February 6th, 2012 No comments

A LOVE

SONG

FOR

ALL AGES

Enhanced with High Definition, Lady and the Tramp has been released on Blu-ray for the first time.  The format gives the animated film more color and sharpness missing when it was released in the original VHS Video format. The diamond edition includes the Blu-ray and DVD discs and several bonus features.

The story of Lady and the Tramp has been around since it’s release in the 1050’s and the tale has never lost its luster. It’s Christmas time and Jim Dear gives his wife a gift of a puppy that she names Lady.  We watch her grow, meeting neighbor friends and then a surprise meeting with Tramp a vagabond that lives by the railroad tracks.  This sets up a romance that’s a delight to watch, but like in every relationship there’s a downside.

The film goes on to show bravery, kindness and a glorious future for the characters.  Very kid friendly, Lady and the Tramp will always remain one of my favorites.  Memorable music like Bella Notte and The Siamese Cat songs are also featured in the film.

Although most of the Bonus features are adult level  the whole family still can participate in the showing of them on  Blu-ray and DVD.

Blu-ray Bonus:

  • Disney Second Screen: Inside Walt’s Story Meetings*
  • Audio Commentary: Inside Walt’s Story Meetings
  • Diane Disney Miller: Remembering Dad
  • Three Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
  • Never Recorded Song: “I’m Free as the Breeze”

Classic DVD Bonus:

  • Lady’s Pedigree: The Making of Lady and the Tramp
  • Finding Lady: The Art of the Storyboard
  • Original 1943 Storyboard Version of the Film
  • PuppyPedia: Going to the Dogs
  • “The Siamese Cat Song,” Finding a Voice for the Cats
  • “Bella Notte” Music Video
  • Trailers
  • Excerpts from “Disneyland” TV Shows

The technical aspects for the Blu-ray/DVD are:

  • Voice Cast: Peggy Lee, Barbara Luddy, Larry Roberts, Bill Thompson, Stan Freberg and Lee Millar.
  • Produced by: Walt Disney
  • MPAA Rating: G
  • Genre: Animated, Comedy, Kids
  • Running Time: Feature 1 hr 16 min
  • Aspect Ratio: 2:55.1
  • Sound: Blu-ray Feature Film – 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio DVD Feature Film – 5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix
  • Languages: English, French and Spanish
  • Subtitles: English SDH, French and Spanish
  • Street Date: February 7, 2012
  • Distributed by: Walt Disney Home Entertainment

FINAL ANALYSIS: A lovable film for children and adults alike.  Feature (B), Bonus Extras (B), Total Experience (B)

THE LION KING 3D Blu-ray, review by John Delia

October 2nd, 2011 No comments

THE LION KING

FIRST TIME IN

3D and now on  BLU-RAY

I don’t know if you recently had the opportunity to see The Lion King in 3D at your local theater or the original version in 1994 when it came out, but I had the opportunity to see the film in the 3D Blu-ray disc version and it’s amazing.  The Lion King will probably never be replaced as the all time animated entertainment event for me because it has all the action, drama, comedy and values that make it the best for family viewing, and now in 3D Blu-ray.

The movie follows the adventure of a young lion cub Simba who is next in line to be King of the pride.  But his uncle Scar has other plans and sets up Simba to fail leading to his taking of the throne.  Cast out into the wilderness Simba runs into Pumbaa and Timon who help Simba get his strength and courage back.  When Simba returns to the pride a fight for leadership begins.

The songs are classics with “The Circle of Life” at the very top.  It’s hard to get most of the songs out of your brain once you revisit them and I still toe tap to “Hakuna Matata”.  But my heart belongs to “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”, especially watching Simba and Nala begin their journey in life.

In 3D the movie takes on another level of entertainment.  This super visual mode put me right into the movie showing the characters up close and providing an amazing depth that brought the jungle to my living room.  If you have the 3D television and 3D Blu-ray system it’s the most unique way to see this classic spectacular movie.

The Lion King  Four Disc combo pack turns out to be the best buy for now and the future.  This packaging includes the Blu-ray 3D, a regular Blu-ray disc with the feature film and the bonus features, a DVD of the film with it’s own bonus feature and a fourth Digital copy of the feature so you can download it and take it with you inside your laptop computer or other mobile device.

The Lion King has remained my favorite animated film over the years with just a few being it’s equal.  But, even though it has equals, it’s still the top one on my library shelf.  With the new Diamond Collection beginning, the original DVD has a new guest the 3D Version that will sit along side.  This product is among the new Disney’s Blu-ray Diamond Collection a selection of the most prestigious animated classics in the Disney vault.  The collection will be comprised of those treasured titles and will be released through the year 2016.

The Diamond titles represent the highest level of picture and sound, feature groundbreaking, state-of-the-art immersive bonus content, and include unprecedented levels of interactivity, personalization and customization, made possible because of Blu-ray technology. It all starts with The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, both available October 4, 2011.  Look for Lady and the Tramp DE in Spring of 2012.

Disney makes it easy to upgrade your collection to Blu-ray by just going to dineyupgrade2blu.com for instructions. You don’t have to give up your old DVD format disc and you get an $8 coupon to use for a discount on that Blu-ray title for which you send in purchase tab.

For all you ‘techie’ people let’s look inside the box and find out about the cool technical aspects of this baby.

Video

The color, sharpness, contrast and other goodies depend on your system, but if it is high grade you can depend on the discs inside the box to be top notch.  I found the 3D to be extremely well presented in its 1.178:1 aspect ratio a widescreen format that filled the whole screen with pop out quality and no black bars to distract.  Imaging has been greatly improved over the 2004 release of The Lion King with this pristine high definition picture. It’s hard to beat Disney’s Blu-ray for quality of picture including the fine sharpness, contrast, color and black levels.

Audio

Featuring AC-3, Dolby Digital Surround Sound my system would have blew the doors off the room if I jacked up the levels to full bore.  Instead I notched the film at a level that would fix my body in the center of all the action without destroying the ‘feel’ of the film.  Sound is at least 50% of any film showing and without good levels the presentation fails. The Blu-ray 3D disc provides (English) a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio that easily drives my speaker system.

Special Features

The special bonus features on the discs are quite good and do have more than 2004’s 2 Disc Special Edition of The Lion King. On the 3D Blu-ray there’s just the film where you will experience 3D to the max.  The Blu-ray disc included in the combo pack has many bonus features, but don’t get rid of your 2004 SE because it has some features this edition doesn’t.

Deleted Scenes: 4 never-before-see deleted scenes (6 min)

Bloopers: New funny ‘animated errors’ that make you laugh (1 min)

Deleted Song:  I guess the film was a little too long or the scene was cut, but this special song was not in the original.

The Morning Report:  After you watch the film check this bonus out as it provides a longer sort of alternate version of this scene from the film. (2 min)

Pride of the Lion King: a visit with the crew on the film (36 min)

Sing-a-long mode: The songs from the film are set up with subtitles so the kids (and yourself) will know all the words.

Interactive Blu-ray Gallery: It’s worth the look.

The DVD disc includes the bonus:

The Lion King: A Memoir- Don Hahn:  Hahn takes you on a journey into the creation of the film introducing the people who helped make it happen.  It’s a wonderful behind the scenes memory not to be missed. (20 min)

Disney Second Screen: The Lion Ling Edition provides a chance to sync your laptop or iPad with your Blu-ray disc to provide additional content you control as your movie plays.  It can be a bit dicey to set up and a little techie to use but once you do,…Revelations!

Final Thoughts

For me The Lion King 3D Blu-ray is a no-brainer, but if you are not ever planning on purchasing a 3D system it may not be for you.  However, with the Blu-ray and DVD enclosed in the 3D combo pack, if you are going to purchase the Blu-ray anyway the Combo Pack may be a better deal for any future changes in your entertainment system.

Rating System (with best being a 5): Film- 4.5, Video- 5, Audio- 5, Extras- 3.5, Overall 4.5

TIM BURTON’S

NIGHTMARE BEFORE

CHRISTMAS ON 3D Blu-ray

Things are changing fast in the world of home video and Disney has not fallen behind. Now in release is one of there all time favorites The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D.  The 3D set comes with 3 disks, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD/Digital hybrid.  But the biggest delight is the 3D quality that enhances the clarity and depth of the film for an amazing performance.

The film has been in theaters off and on over the years since it was first released.  However for those who haven’t seen the film the animated story by Tim Burton goes like this: Bored with his perennial role as Halloween Town’s frightening Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington wanders off and discovers the cheerful village of Christmas Town. Determined to shake things up in Halloween Town, he enlists the help of some mischievous trick-or-treaters to kidnap Santa Claus and takes over the job of delivering gifts to the children of the world himself. When his plan goes awry, Jack attempts to restore Santa to his rightful place. But first, he must rescue St. Nick from the clutches of the evil Oogie Boogie!

The extras are plenty and include:

A Special Introduction by Tim Burton

What’s This? Jack’s Haunted Mansion Holiday Tour – Viewers choose the way they want to tour Disneyland’s Holiday Haunted Mansion. “On Track” explores a tricked-out version of the Haunted Mansion, while “Off Track” reveals what went into creating all the creepy fun.

Frankenweenie Short Film– A un-cut version of the Frankenweenie short with introduction by Tim Burton.

Vincent Short Film

Tim Burton’s Original poem narrated by Christopher Lee – Tim Burton’s poem that inspired the creation of the movie. Now, the original verse comes to creepy life as performed by legendary actor Christopher Lee.

Film Commentary – commentary by producer and writer Tim Burton, director Henry Selick and composer Danny Elfman.

The Making of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas - Go behind the scenes of the very first full-length stop motion animated movie with the filmmakers.

The Worlds of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas – Witness the creation of the film’s richly imagined dreamscapes, including Halloween Town, Christmas Town and the Real World.

Deleted Scenes

But, will the kids like the film?  With Halloween just weeks away it fits right into the holiday season and mature youngsters should gobble the film up, especially if you have Blu-ray or the ultimate Blu-ray 3D.

TRON: LEGACY released on Blu-ray 3D and regular formats

TRON:LEGACY has been release on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD formats

Review By John Delia

Excellent computer generated graphics in 3D in the action adventure Tron: Legacy are now available now available for you home entertainment system.  I am pleasantly surprised by Blu-ray 3D which provides some great moments on the home screen.  Embarrassingly I didn’t really grasp the story as much as I would have liked to at the movie theater being distracted by all he eye popping special effects, but at home it’s a better experience.

This sequel to the original Tron (also now available in Blu-ray) has a lot going for it.  The hard pounding video game feeling, fast paced story and exciting action are a treat for those who crave a double dose of excitement.

In this story we find a rebellious Sam Flynn, the son of Kevin (from the original) who has inherited his father’s video gaming business still down about his dad’s disappearance.  Sam gets a strange signal that leads him to his father’s first arcade where he discovers the original game his father was working on.  When he tries to start the game up, he gets sucked into the cyber universe.

Amazing computer graphics

The cool visuals, constant chase scenes and interesting storyline are just part of the entertainment when you watch the film in the Blu-ray 3D format.  Crystal clear and in surround sound that comes with most systems, you feel like you are part of all the action.  It’s the best way the see this film.

Being able to replay the film gives a huge advantage since there is a lot to enjoy on the home entertainment medium.  But, even without the 3D, the Blu-ray disc also provides the experience in full measure.

There are many special bonus features that add hours more to the experience.  Here is a list of what awaits you on the formats.

TANGLED, Released on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD

By John Delia

One of my most loved animated films of 2010 gets its release on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD.  The much-anticipated full-length feature provides a fun time for the whole family.  Tangled grossed over $400 million worldwide in theatres making it one of the highest Disney producers.

When the kingdom’s most wanted—and most charming—bandit Flynn Rider (voice of ZACHARY LEVI) hides out in a mysterious tower, he’s taken hostage by Rapunzel (voice of MANDY MOORE), a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. Flynn’s curious captor, who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower she’s been locked away in for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief, and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an overprotective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs.

Tangled comes in the 3D Blu-ray format in addition to the regular Blu-ray and DVD.  The 3D is very realistic providing amazing depth of field, eye popping thrills and enhanced graphics.  It’s the ideal way to view the film beyond regular Blu-ray.  But with all animation films, the regular DVD format contains all the magic and color, so if you do not have 3D or Blu-ray capabilities, the movie still delivers the experience in a big way.

In addition to combo packs and 1 disc DVD Tangled is also released in a special 4-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) contains all the special features including:

Blu-ray

Untangled: The Making of a Fairy Tale with questions answered on most every topic about the film, Deleted Scenes that had cut from the film, Extended Songs, 9 Tangled teasers and more.

DVD

The special bonus features here included on the DVD are two very interesting surprises, two original storybook openings and a 50th Animated Feature Countdown.
