“Midsommar” a Carnal Retreat

Review by John Delia, Sr.

Not for everyone, the horror movie Midsommar has a lot of emotional angst combined with explicit brutal violence and sex. It’s much like the film Suspiria where the filmmakers invent hysteria through ugly CGI that turns humans into monsters, twist bones like pretzels and end their film with graphic nude witchery. And Midsommar’s just as bizarre. Read more…

A moving dramatic biography, The White Crow, opens this weekend and it’s not only a magnificent production, but a reminder of one of the most remarkable events in history. If you have heard of Rudolf Nureyev than you have a good idea of why he was a spark that helped to melt the cold war. If not then you are in for an enlightening of the extraordinary dancer’s challenging life. Read more…

“Suspiria” Dancing with Evil

Weird and disturbing the movie Suspiria takes you into the realm of evil. Although it could have been a good film for horror fans, the film lags to extremes and movies so slow you may nod off from the droning music and repetitious modern ballet. When you do finally get to the terror, for horror fans it’s a good presentation of typical gore and extreme evil violence. Not for the squeamish or fearful the film does achieve points of cruel depravity, pernicious nudity and bone snapping body parts. Bring a pillow, you’ll be there for a while. Read more…

Those interested in the sexual revolution of males in the 1970’s, may want to check out the biographical film Tom of Finland. The famous graphic artist used his drawings to express his feelings for men and their enactment of physical contact. It may be a dark horse for awards consideration and “pushes the envelope” with its gay sexual edge. Read more…

“CHIPS” (Written Film Review & Trailer)

Rude, crude, extremely silly and violent the movie CHIPS has all of this and more. But, what you would expect from this parody of a TV series that won the hearts of millions in the mid 1970’s to early 80’s? A lot more than a lame remake. Billed as a crime drama, it’s more of a comedy with messy direction and over the top ridiculousness. I can go one step further; “CHIPS” was never a campy offensive show that relied on sex gags and stupidity to get laughs. That said, only go see it if you crave movies like Hot Tub Time Machine, Get Him to the Greek or Sex Drive to name a few. Read more…

Here’s a quirky little film that could sneak in for an Oscar if the wind blows their way. It’s called American Honey and works its magic with a strong appeal to mature teens through 20’s. The film has a radical edge that takes a stab at the wealthy and also preys on the goodness of middle class America. That said, it’s also an eye opener of America’s failure to influence the young toward important social values and the danger of negative ones. Read more…
