Walt Disney’s Live Action “Aladdin” on Blu-ray

Review by Susan Phillips

An exciting adventure Disney doesn’t disappoint bringing the story of Aladdin to the big screen in this live action version. And now that it’s on Blu-ray I found it just as stunning in the privacy of our own home. If you saw the tale years ago as an animated feature then you know the adventure, the comedy and the romance. But, there are some Hollywood changes, CGI special effects and a whole new live action cast.

Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scoot) is not aloud outside of her castle because of her father’s fear his only child will be hurt. In her hope to learn more about the people of her kingdom she sneaks out to the city where she meets a street thief, Aladdin (Mena Massoud) and his monkey Abu (CGI animated). Jasmine tells Aladdin she is the princess’s hand maid, and the two have an instant connection.

The Princesses father, the Sultan (Navid Negahban), is trying to find the right suitor for his daughter to marry to take his role as Sultan. The Sultan’s second in command, Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), wants to rule the kingdom but hides his greed for power.

Aladdin (Mena Massoud) and Jasmine (Naomi Scott) flee from palace guards on the streets of Agrabah in ALADDIN, a live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic.

Now, Jafar however knows he can get this power from the Genie locked in a lamp that can only be found deep inside the Cave Of Wonders. He recognizes Aladdin’s abilities as a thief and gets tricks Aladdin and Abu to retrieve the lamp for him. So begins an adventure with a couple of twists and a whole lot of fun.

Director Guy Ritchie, who also co-wrote the screenplay with John August, made sure this movie will be enjoyable for everyone. The scenery of the city and the Cave Of Wonders is amazing. And, the choreography of the stunts was so well done, it brought the excitement factor up a couple of notches.

Aladdin (Mena Massoud) meets the larger-than-life blue Genie (Will Smith) in Disney’s live-action adaptation ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

The costumes were stunning. The songs are pleasantly familiar with a few new ones as well. The story keeps moving along since there is a lot to tell in this 2 hour 8 minute film. For those who may doubt Will Smith as the right choice to play the role of Genie, I hope you will be pleasantly surprised. He brought the right amount of charisma and charm, and the animators did a nice job of making him genie-like.

I thoroughly enjoyed this move and give it a 5 star rating. It’s sure to be an even bigger his on home video. Especially since you can pause, rewind, and talk with the kids while they watch it over and over again. Well, I’m not sure you want to be with them the next time around. And there’s plenty of bonus features for the whole family to watch.
